Matt Cantor

Integrative psychotherapist (PGDip, Adv Dip, UKCP, MBACP)

About me

I am trained as an Integrative Psychotherapist which means I that I am trained in various different styles of psychotherapy and apply these to clients in a way that feels right for the individual rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

Before my training as a psychotherapist, I worked for 20 years in the music industry as a producer and DJ. Although this was a fantastic experience that allowed me to travel the world, playing and making music I also grew to understand that there are pressures and anxieties that go hand in hand with this lifestyle.

Since qualifying I have run a private practice for over ten years specialising in working with people from the music Industry. I have worked extensively with DJ’s, producers, musicians, singers, production managers, sound mixers and engineers. I have contributed to panels and podcasts exploring mental health in the music industry as well as articles for various music magazines.

My work can involve helping clients in the music industry to untangle their music industry persona from the self they have always been. This can be important in helping them to weather the highs and lows that this business invariably brings.

My background

Through being in the music industry myself I understand full well that anxiety, performance anxiety, stress and burnout are just some of the difficulties that come with working in this often-hedonistic environment.

I trained to be an Integrative Psychotherapist at Regents University in London. The training is UKCP accredited and lasted for 5 years, incorporating numerous experiential elements, ensuring that I am professionally competent and able to work with the many different problems that can confront us.

I have worked across a broad spectrum from counselling children for the Place 2 Be charity to working as a psychotherapist in an NHS drop in centre for young people in crisis. I have also participated in ward rounds at a psychiatric unit of an NHS hospital.

Working with me

The way I work is open and exploratory and I work with a wide variety of problems including depression, relationship difficulties, eating disorders, sexual abuse, anxiety or just feeling a bit lost.

I usually suggest an initial session so that we can meet each other and you can get a feel for how I work and see if you feel that I would be the right therapist for you.

In my experience effective therapy is very much about how the therapist ‘fits’ with the client and the quality of the relationship so it’s important that you feel comfortable working with me.

I use various techniques in my work from free association to dream analysis to focusing on emotions in the body. More importantly I like to stay free and fluid as I work as this allows our work together to be effective and not stuck in one approach that may not resonate with you.

I look forward to exploring your world with you.
