Kevin O’Byrne
Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Wellbeing Consultant (IACP)
About me
Integrative and psychodynamic psychotherapy form two pillars of my approach. My work has a deep interest in moving past the mere ridding of ‘symptoms’ to equipping the individual to live a life that is more meaningful on all levels of actualization. The individual in relationships is a core focus of my work; how has the relationship formed me, hurt me or encouraged me? What scripts, assumptions or blocks exist and can be examined through the therapy relationship?
At the heart of my approach is existential and creative approaches, what fundamentally makes us human and alive is our ability to create and to live with freedom and responsibility. As a therapist I strive to ensure clients are imbued with courage and permission to face into a creative life. I am also aware therapy needs to be more culturally affirmative, and must move beyond the western logical hegemony, and so I integrate creative arts (music and art therapy) approaches and client preferences where needed.
My background
Prior to working as a therapist, I was an active musician writing original music, doing session work and working in various education settings. I initially studied jazz guitar in Dublin City Universities BA Jazz Performance before finishing my degree in BIMM Dublin in 2015. My experience as a working musician closely informs my therapy practice, through the importance of connection, versatility, making connections and ‘creating a therapy’ for each person who is in front of you. It also gives me lived insight into the logistical and practical demands of making a living from music professional, and so my practice is affirmative and culturally sensitive to this context.
Working with me
At the core of my approach is a supportive alliance and a keen interest in ‘creating a new therapy’ for each individual who I speak to. I am highly collaborative and work with immediacy in the room, practically this looks like using client preferences, outcome measures and regular feedback/check-ins to ensure we are adherent to reaching the clients goals. Outside of this I draw heavily on psychodynamic, existential and humanistic approaches i.e., how your past is presenting now, what an existentially meaningful life is to you and how you can be supported to grow in accordance with your inner voice. In a nutshell my approach blends (in varying degrees) both the immediacy of a helping relationship and the strengths of empirical psychology tools.
