MITC @ ESNS26

MITC psychologist Anne Löhr (DGSF) and Operations Director Laura Newton (BA Hons) attended Eurosonic Noorderslag 2026 (ESNS26) this past January, to contribute their expertise to a panel entitled: Surviving Success: Mental Health, Power, and Pressure in the Modern Music Industry. They were joined by artist Jack Garratt and his manager, Sarah Gates.

The panel discussed Garratt’s success early in his career, including his experience with loss of control and intense pressure. They not only presented his first-person perspective, they also provided insight and perspective from his manager and the clinical expertise from MITC members.

The goal was to unpack how power dynamics and unrealistic expectations impact not only artists, but their teams as well. They discussed how some mental health challenges could be viewed as a symptom of the system as a whole, rather than the artist’s personal failure. They presented what sustainable success could look like, including the importance of agency, clarity, communication, and healthy boundaries.
